INTRODUCTION

The island of Mykonos belongs to the Cyclades group of islands and is one of the most famous Greek islands. The Aegean architecture, the spotlessly clean beaches combined with the archaeological sites on the neighboring island of Delos, have contributed to the fact that Mykonos has taken the first place in tourism and enjoys a worldwide tourist publicity for many years now.

One may travel to Mykonos by taking an airplane from Athens and a large number of cities all over the world. However, the majority of tourists sail into the island by liners (large cruise ships and plenty of private yachts).

In the past decade, the number of ships reaching the port of Mykonos has over-doubled. During the period from May to September, 10 to 12 coasters sail to Mykonos every day, 4 or 5 out of which arrive almost at the same time at midday.
During the summer season, there are 2 or 3 arrivals of cruise ships on a daily basis, whereas on Friday nights there are 6 or 7 arrivals, in view of the oncoming weekend.
Cruise ships are large, being more than 200 metres long, at a large percentage.
